Why do Koreans suddenly buy ampoules every autumn?

2026-10-09

분홍색 배경 위에 여러 종류의 스킨케어 세럼과 앰플 병이 나란히 놓여 있다.

In October, an international student asked me this. "Teacher, my friends are suddenly buying ampoules. I have lotion I used in the summer, so why?" In Korea, when the weather changes, people change their skincare too. But hardly anyone tells you this. ## The Term "Seasonal Change Skin" "Hwanjeolgi" refers to the time when the seasons change. Korea has four distinct seasons, so you can really feel this period. In autumn, it's warm during the day but chilly in the morning and evening, so the temperature difference within a single day is big. The air is also drier than in summer. That's why your skin feels tight and looks dull. Koreans say, "It's the change of seasons, so my skin has gone haywire." ## The Order That Only Those in the Know Follow The secret is the order, not the product. First, lightly exfoliate, then apply a moisturizing ampoule and cream the same day. I think that if dead skin builds up, even a good ampoule won't absorb well. But you shouldn't exfoliate too often. The recommended frequency differs by product, so be sure to read the instructions. If your skin stings or turns red, you should take a break. ## Why does no one tell you? It's something your mom, your sister, and your friends do at the same time every year, so you have no memory of ever being "taught" it. It's so obvious that no one thinks to explain it. At a store like Olive Young, tell a staff member, "My skin is dry because of the change of seasons. Please recommend a moisturizing ampoule." This one phrase is enough.
