If the floor suddenly turned cold this fall, check your boiler's "Away" mode first

The first day I turned on the heating, the boiler fired up, but the floor was still cold. An international student asked this too. "Teacher, is it broken?" If you search for it, the answer is one line. **Press the 'Away' button on the boiler controller to cancel it.** ## 'Away' doesn't mean 'off' This answer alone isn't enough. If you don't know why there's an "away" button instead of an "off" button, you'll get confused again. Away mode just keeps the water slightly warm, only enough to keep your house from freezing. In Korea, floor heating works by running warm water through pipes beneath the floor. If the temperature drops below zero in winter, that water can freeze and burst the pipes. That's why you don't turn it off completely, but leave it running on low. Also, a floor that has gotten very cold takes a long time to warm up again. ## Check these things Check whether the word 'Away' or 'Schedule' is lit on the thermostat screen. If Away is on, press the button once to turn it off, and then set the temperature you want. The floor doesn't get warm right away. You'll have to wait a few hours, so allow yourself some extra time. ## If it's still cold If pressing the button doesn't change anything, tell your landlord or the building management office. In apartment buildings, the heating for the whole building may not have started yet. The heating start date differs from complex to complex, so you need to check the notice. In older homes, the pipes may need to be inspected. If you say, "The floor isn't warm," that's enough to get your message across.
