Why are the priority seats on the subway empty even when it's crowded?

2026-10-01

지하철 객차 안에서 여러 사람이 서서 가고 있는 모습.

It's the subway at rush hour. People are packed tightly together standing, but the pink and dark-colored seats are completely empty. Is it okay to sit down? ## Those seats are for "someone who might come" The priority seats are for the elderly, people with limited mobility, and pregnant women. But you won't be punished for sitting there. Even so, most Koreans leave it empty. You never know when someone who needs it might get on, so they keep the seat free ahead of time. ## Some people don't look like they need it It's hard to tell that a woman is pregnant before her belly starts to show. That's why the priority seat for pregnant women is a eye-catching pink. Pregnant women sometimes attach a pink badge or keychain to their bags. The person who sees that sign stands up to offer the seat. ## Small promises add up to the rules of a society There is a reason it is followed even though it isn't a law. In a small city where many people ride together, people believe that if everyone puts up with a little inconvenience, everyone is more comfortable. An empty seat is that belief made visible. There is also a tip that travelers can use. If there are lots of empty seats and few people around, it's fine to sit down. But when it's crowded, look for a regular seat. If an elderly person or a pregnant woman comes while you're sitting, give them a nod and stand up. Even if you don't speak the same language, the feeling still gets across.
