Have you ever hesitated while opening the door to a restaurant? When you're worried you might feel self-conscious about eating alone. In Korea, eating alone is very common, and there's a clear reason: as city life and single-person households have increased, restaurants have created seats for solo diners and there are many single-serving menus that come out quickly. Also, Koreans generally don't pay much attention to other people's meals, so you won't feel judged. ## Isn't it strange to eat alone? No, it's not. Many cafes and restaurants have counter seats, window seats, and single-person menus. Historically, busy commuting and workplace culture led to the development of fast foods that are easy to eat alone. If you're worried, just say "1인입니다" in front of the place and go in. ## Where is it good to eat alone? Places like snack shops (김밥, 떡볶이), rice-bowl and ramen shops, kalguksu noodle restaurants, convenience-store lunchboxes, and single-person jjim/grill specialty places are good. These places have single-serving menus and a quick turnover, so they're convenient to go to alone. Ask for a window or counter seat. ## What should you watch out for when ordering or at your seat? Say "one serving" or "I'm one person". During busy times, it's polite not to occupy a large table for long, and avoid loud phone calls while eating. If you need takeout, say "Please pack it to go".
