An international student was startled when they looked out the window on moving day. A ladder truck was going up, and a refrigerator and a bed were sliding right in through the window. It's a common sight in Korea. That's because there are many apartments, and the elevators are so small that big furniture won't fit in many homes. So when should you call a ladder truck? ## When you have big furniture and live on a high floor Refrigerators, wardrobes, and beds either don't fit in the elevator or are hard to turn on the stairs. In these cases, a ladder truck is faster and safer. There's also less chance of furniture getting damaged by hitting the walls. Be sure to tell the moving company which floor you're on and whether items can be received through the window. Prices vary by company and floor, so ask in advance. ## When You Have Few Belongings and the Elevator Is Big If you live in a studio apartment or have few belongings, you can just move everything by elevator. However, at many apartment complexes you have to reserve the elevator for moving day. That's because many households move on the same day, and if one household takes too long, the neighbors are inconvenienced. The rules differ from complex to complex, so asking the management office is the most accurate way to find out. ## When you decide to use a ladder truck A truck needs a place to park, so check the parking space in advance. Since it's noisy too, on your front door or in the elevator, "We're moving today. Sorry for the noise" — if you put up a short notice like that, your neighbors will appreciate it. Furniture going up through the window is a fun sight to watch, but it's really a way of showing consideration for the building you share with your neighbors.
