Why do apartment complexes set specific recycling days?

2026-10-20

주차된 차들과 무성한 나무 가까이, 지붕이 덮인 통로 옆에 재활용품을 모으는 파란색 수거함이 놓여 있다.

I heard that a foreign student who had only moved in a few days earlier put out the trash and ended up having this conversation with the security guard. > Security guard: "Today is Tuesday. Recycling is on Wednesday." > Student: "Oh, I'm sorry. So when should I put it out?" > Security guard: "Please sort it and put it out tomorrow evening." ## "It's Wednesday" is a promise within the complex Many apartment complexes set a day and time for putting out recyclables. If everyone puts them out on the same day, the collection truck can pick them all up at once, and the trash doesn't pile up outside for long. The day differs from complex to complex. ## "Sorting" has a history The volume-based trash fee system started in 1995. To throw away trash, you have to buy the designated bags with your own money. Then people started collecting paper, plastic, cans, and glass separately. That habit became today's recycling system. ## Food waste is thrown away separately Food waste smells and can be reused if collected separately, so it is separated from general trash. Some places use special bags, while others have you throw it into a dedicated bin in the apartment complex. The method varies by region. If you move, be sure to check the guidance from your building management office or district office. If you're not sure, ask a neighbor, "When do I put out the recycling?" This one phrase is enough.
