Why it's okay to leave your laptop and wallet at a café and go to the restroom

Someone with a laptop open in a café leaves even their wallet and phone behind to go to the restroom. A foreign friend sees this and is startled. Is it really okay? ## When you go to the restroom in an indoor café Most of the time, it's fine. Korean cafés usually have CCTV, and customers keep coming and going. Since it's a spot where people notice right away, touching someone else's belongings rarely happens. Also, it's very common to save a seat with your bags. A spot where something has been left works like an unspoken agreement that "this seat is taken." Still, theft isn't completely unheard of. It's best to take your wallet and phone with you. ## At an Outdoor Autumn Foliage Café In autumn, outdoor cafés where people go to see the fall foliage get crowded. At places like these, the tables are spread out widely across the yard and the terrace. Many people wander around taking photos, and there are many seats that staff can't see. So only save your seat with a jacket or a bag, and be sure to keep your valuables on you. If you're with a group, have one person stay at the table. ## When You're Away from Your Seat for a Long Time Saving a seat means "I'll be right back." You shouldn't leave it empty for a long time, like when you go out to eat a meal. When the café is busy, other people are waiting, and the staff may even clear away your things. The exact rules differ from café to café. If you're not sure, ask a staff member, "Can I leave my things here for a moment?"
