A foreign friend asked me at the checkout counter of a cosmetics store. "It says 'Tax Refund Immediate Refund.' Don't you get tax refunds at the airport?" A lot of people think that. But in Korea, there's also a way to get your money back right at the store. ## Let's break the phrase into three pieces - **Tax refund**: A system that gives tourists back the tax included in the price of goods. - **Immediate**: It means it's handled right there at the point of payment. - **Refund**: It doesn't mean returning the item. It means the tax is given back. So you just pay the price with the tax already taken off the bill, and that's it. It's like the money you'd get back later is discounted upfront. ## Why do shops do it on the spot? There are two reasons. First, from the shop's point of view, if the price looks cheaper right away, tourists buy more. Second, on the day you leave Korea, if lots of people crowd the airport refund counter, the lines get long. If the shop processes it in advance, the airport is less crowded. ## How to do it at the checkout Before you pay, show your passport and ask, "Is tax refund available?" After payment is done, it may not be possible to process it. Be sure to carry your passport with you. Be careful about one thing. Items for which you received an immediate refund must be taken out of Korea within the set period. If you don't, you may have to pay the tax again. Limits and conditions may change, so check the latest information with the store, the Korea Customs Service, or your refund provider.
