In February, money I didn't recognize showed up in my bank account — they say it's the "13th month's salary."

A foreign student sent me this message in February. "Teacher, some money I don't recognize has come into my bank account. Someone must have sent it by mistake!" This is something foreign workers in Korea run into quite often. The conversation I had with a coworker at the time went like this. > "Your pay is a bit higher this month, isn't it?" > "The year-end tax settlement refund came in too." > "Oh, it's the 13th month's paycheck!" ## Breaking Down the Conversation **Year-end tax settlement** is the process of recalculating your taxes after the year ends. A **refund** is money you get back for taxes you overpaid. The **13th month's paycheck** is a joke that it feels like a thirteenth paycheck, even though a year has only 12 months. It's not money you didn't know about; it was your own money all along. ## Why is it taken out in advance and returned later? Every time a company pays your salary, it withholds taxes in advance. But how much you'll earn this year, and how much you'll spend on medical or education expenses, can only be known at the end of the year. So they first withhold an estimated amount, and when the year ends, they recalculate based on what you actually spent. If you paid too much, you get a refund; if you paid too little, you pay a bit more. That's why many people get extra money added to their paycheck around February. ## What you can use right away - Look up the 'Year-End Tax Settlement Simplified Service' on the National Tax Service's **Hometax**. It gathers and shows your hospital bills and card usage records. - Just hand that data in to the person in charge at your company. The notice usually arrives in January. - The deduction amounts and limits change every year. Be sure to check the numbers on Hometax or with the person in charge at your company. - If you worked at more than one place during the year, ask the person in charge first. Don't be surprised when you look at your bank account in February, and if you get a notice, get things ready ahead of time.
