I was invited to a Korean friend's new home and brought a bottle of wine. But another guest showed up with a pack of toilet paper. Why did they do that? ## The rule: bring toilet paper or detergent to a housewarming When someone who has moved invites friends over to their home, it's called a 'jipdeuri' (housewarming). Giving toilet paper or detergent as a gift on these occasions is a long-standing custom. The reason is a play on words. Detergent makes lots of foam, so it means "may your household rise up like bubbles." Toilet paper unrolls smoothly, so it means "may everything go smoothly." Right after moving, you need to buy a lot of things, so it's actually a welcome gift too. ## Exception 1: These days, people bring other things too Young people these days often bring fruit, cake, or drinks. Because eating together instantly makes everyone happy. I heard they were really popular, since even international students took desserts to go. Wine is fine too. Just ask in advance whether the host drinks alcohol. ## Exception 2: When It's Not a New Home If you were just invited over, rather than visiting a newly moved-into home, toilet paper can feel a little awkward. You only use this gift at a housewarming in a new home. If you're not sure, ask, "Is there anything you need?" Ask ahead of time. That question is a good gift too.
