Why do people in neighborhood parks walk around carrying their shoes in their hands?

2026-10-15

공원의 알록달록한 고무 바닥 위에 야외 운동기구들이 놓여 있는 모습이다.

If you walk through a neighborhood park, you'll see older people carrying their shoes in their hands and walking along dirt paths. Next to them, there are also rows of metal exercise machines. Many foreigners think, "Isn't that playground equipment, or a place you have to pay to use?" But it's neither. ## The exercise machines are free for everyone Those machines are usually installed by local governments, such as district or city offices. They're community sports facilities meant to let anyone exercise close to home, so you don't need money or a membership card. Many older adults find gyms intimidating, so the machines get used even more often. They look like playground equipment because they're brightly colored and outdoors. ## There's a reason for taking off your shoes Barefoot walking has become hugely popular over the past few years. That's because a lot of people believe that stimulating the soles of your feet is good for your body. How effective it really is depends on who you ask. Still, plenty of people say that stepping on soil just feels good. That's why many parks have a separate soft dirt path, and at the end of the path there's also a foot-washing station. The reason people carry their shoes is that they're either on their way to that path or on their way out after finishing it. ## If You Want to Try It Yourself Please read the sign at the entrance to the dirt path first. There may be sharp stones or pieces of glass, so walk slowly. It's slippery after rain. It's handy to bring a towel and an extra pair of socks. If you're not feeling well, don't push yourself.
