Have you ever been surprised while looking at the Seoul subway map? At the end of the lines, there are names like Chuncheon and Yangpyeong. You ride with the same transit card, and before you know it, you're in Gangwon Province. It's perfect for going to see the autumn leaves. But there are a few things that are rude to do if you don't know about them. ## Why does the subway go so far? That's because the existing railway lines are connected to the subway and used together. In the cities around Seoul, there are a great many people who commute to Seoul for work or school. So lines like the Gyeongchun Line and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line connect Seoul with faraway cities. You may be traveling, but the same train also carries people commuting to and from work. ## Backpacks, Smells, and Voices If you stand in a crowded car wearing a hiking backpack, the person behind you will get bumped. Take your backpack off and hold it in front of you, or put it down by your feet. If you eat kimbap or drink makgeolli on the train, the smell spreads and you may get disapproving looks. It's best to keep your voice low when you talk, too. That's because for Koreans, the subway is a place to rest quietly. ## How to Take a Seat You may want to sit since the ride is long, but leave the pink pregnant women's seats and the priority seats for the elderly empty. Even if the seat is empty, it still applies. Someone who needs it might get on at the next station. You can sit comfortably in any of the other regular seats. Before you leave, be sure to check the fare, travel time, and last train time in a map app or a subway route app. They can vary by day and by line.
